Mono Testing in Daytona Beach Shores, FL

Mononucleosis (mono) is a common infection caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Mono is highly contagious, easily transmitted through saliva, and often spreads like wildfire in classrooms and college dorms. Telltale signs include overwhelming fatigue, fever, swollen neck glands, and a severe sore throat. At Halifax Health ExpressCare, we may suggest mono testing for anyone—especially a teenager or young adult—who has these symptoms.

Even though there is no specific treatment for mono, testing is still important because it can help us pinpoint the source of the symptoms, rule out other causes such as strep throat, and prevent severe complications, such as an enlarged spleen. Additionally, with a confirmed diagnosis of mono, it is especially important to take steps to avoid infecting others.

What Does Mono Testing Involve?

Mono testing is a relatively simple blood test. After we draw a small blood sample, we can process it in our on-site lab using Monospot, a rapid diagnostic test that can detect antibodies produced by the body’s immune system in response to EBV. As part of the diagnostic process for mono, we will also perform a thorough physical examination.

How Is Mono Treated?

Because mono is a viral infection, it does not respond to antibiotics. Instead, treatment generally involves managing the symptoms and helping the body fight off the infection. To do so, we may suggest:

  • Resting comfortably at home for up to a few weeks
  • Drinking plenty of water to stay well-hydrated
  • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever or fever reducer

To help relieve severe swelling in the throat and tonsils, we may also prescribe corticosteroids. During recovery, it is especially important to avoid heavy lifting, contact sports, and other strenuous physical activities because mono can cause spleen enlargement, making the organ more susceptible to rupture. Additionally, the virus will remain contagious until the infection resolves, which underscores the need to avoid close contact with others.
